Barier guard seed cylinder feeder

WILL THIS FEEDER WORK WITH A SEED CYLINDER 8" tall and 6" diameter?

Nature Niche

We do not recommend that you use the Large 6" diameter seed cylinders with this feeder. When using the large cylinders it makes the space between the barrier and the birdseed small enough that the larger bully birds can reach the seed. We recommend using the smaller standard 4" size cylinders so that your smaller songbirds can eat in peace: https://nature-niche.com/collections/seed-cylinder-feeders/products/barrier-guard-seed-cylinder-feeder-banquet-bundle

Do the small birds fit inside the cage? How do they reach the seed cylinder?

Nature Niche

Yes, this feeder attracts the following birds or birds similar in size: Bluebirds, chickadees, downy woodpeckers, titmice, nuthatches, mockingbirds (sometimes, customers have had mixed results), wrens, and occasionally warblers. The barrier is too small for cardinals to comfortably use the feeder. We recommend the perch accessory so the birds have a place to land to figure out this style of feeder: https://nature-niche.com/products/barrier-guard-feeder-perch-accessory?_pos=1&_psq=perch+a&_ss=e&_v=1.0

I am having an issue with grackles and starlings overtaking my feeders. Will this help? I have separate peanuts for my blue jays. Now Cardinals are my favorite but will this keep them out or can they fit and woodpeckers?

Nature Niche

Yes, this barrier guard feeder has 1.5"x1.5" mesh grid that will keep out European starlings and larger birds like grackles. Downy woodpeckers can fit through the grid, but the larger woodpecker species cannot. Technically, northern cardinals can fit through this size mesh, but we've heard from manufacturers and customers that they choose not to try, in most cases. We hear they will go through 2"x2" mesh of typical dove guards, but this size will also let the starlings through. For more ideas about deterring starlings, check out this environmental education post we did last winter: https://youtu.be/trf28-1uKEI?si=9XXSbqlKEX7_4Nf- And a Cornell Lab of Ornithology post: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/my-feeders-are-being-overrun-with-starlings-and-blackbirds-that-eat-all-the-food-and-keep-smaller-birds-away-what-can-i-do/#
