The Sparrow Shield has been successful in deterring invasive House Sparrows from using Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow nest boxes when installed on boxes still unclaimed by the sparrows. Our native cavity-nesting songbirds will adapt to the shield and still use the nest box; whereas invasive House Sparrows do not like the movement of the lines or their feathers being brushed by them. House sparrows tend to avoid having to fly between the 4 vertical, weighted lines hanging from the "halo."

This passive device has 4 heavy duty, twisted, yellow plastic lines weighted with 0.5-ounce ultra steel and hanging from an aluminum metal ring suspended above the nesting box roof by a cedar bracket. The thick plastic lines are an improvement upon previously used weighted, free-hanging monofilament or fishing line to address concerns about potential bird or predator entanglement.

Sparrow Shield Installation Guidelines & Timing:

Mount the wooden bracket to the top of the nest box with the two provided screws. Insert the ends of the aluminum metal ring into the two nest holes in the wooden holder. The lines should naturally hang straight down. There should be a clear path to the entry hole of the nest box.

For best results, install the Sparrow Shields on bird boxes that have not yet been discovered or claimed by House Sparrows. Once a House Sparrow has located a box, a Shield is much less likely to deter them.

Keep in mind, Shields may not always succeed in every situation, as their effectiveness can vary depending on factors like the size of the local population of House Sparrows and the intensity of competition for nest sites in your area. Occasionally, a very persistent male House Sparrow will thwart it. If you're exploring passive House Sparrow control methods, we hope you try the Sparrow Shield!

They Work!!!

I’ve been putting up nest boxes for the bluebirds for the past three years. Our first year we had two clutches of laid, hatched, and fledged bluebird eggs. The next two years we had three clutches each year. We had thirty-nine baby blues in those three years. We looked forward in anticipation for this spring to see more of the same. Instead, we got aggressive house sparrows who took over the nest boxes. After repeated destroying of their nests they stopped building but at the same time would not let the blues build either. I researched on line and found your sparrow shield. The day I ordered them I took down the nest boxes completely. The following week when the shields arrived I attached them to the nest boxes, put them back in place and waited, and watched. Sparrows would fly towards it and then veer off. They would not try to enter the boxes. The bluebirds that were coming to my feeder box were interested and checked it out but not enough to commit. This past week a pair decided this was the place. Nest building commenced and as I write this review today the first egg has been laid. Grateful to nature-niche to carry and supply this product. I have a second box that I have seen other birds fly in and checkout, chickadees, wren, but no sparrows. Bottom line for me they keep house sparrows out of and away from my bluebird nest boxes. Thank - you Nature Niche!

Sparrow Shield really works!!!

I had sparrows that took over my bluebird box. I closed up the box for and few days, moved it far from our bird feeder and installed the Sparrow Shield. The sparrows have not tried to get back into the box and the bluebirds are nesting again. Plus the bluebirds like to perch on the metal ring. So glad I bought the Sparrow Shield!

It worked!

I ordered this as soon as it was back in stock. While waiting to receive it, a male sparrow took up residence and started nest building. I was worried I was too late this year, but after removing the sparrow nest, setting up the shield, I soon had a pair of bluebirds take over the box! I’m so glad I tried this! 💙
