This Bluebird House features a slotted entrance recessed under the roofline, which allows bluebirds in but helps to deter house sparrows! The slot entrance allows more light to enter the box (house sparrows tend to prefer darker boxes) and potentially provides an exit, if an invasive house sparrow corners an adult bluebird inside. One side has a clear plexiglass panel, allowing for easy viewing without disturbing the nest inside. Great nest box for educational activities and kids!

Please Note: No bluebird box is completely house sparrow-proof, so continue to monitor this box as with any other style.

Our 5 Piece Bluebird Pole Set with Twist In Ground Socket would give you a sturdy option for mounting your new bluebird house from the bottom or back.

Not a sparrow resistant bird house

This is not sparrow resistant. Less than 24 hours after putting up the house sparrows began filling it with nesting materials. Quality of house is very good but reason for purchasing it was to resist the sparrows.

We're sorry to hear this happened with the nest box. To be honest, no bluebird nest box is absolutely house sparrow-proof. If you live in an area with high house sparrow populations and high competition for nesting sites, this will likely always be an issue. You might consider adding a preemptive house sparrow deterrent like the Sparrow Shield (https://nature-niche.com/collections/bird-house-accessories/products/sparrow-shield). Add this to any box when you first put it up. You could try relocating your box with a deterrent added before the sparrows have a chance to fixate on the box. If you end up with a bluebird pair with one or more eggs, and the sparrows start pestering them, switch to a more aggressive spooking device like the Sparrow Chaser (https://nature-niche.com/collections/bird-house-accessories/products/sparrow-chaser-invasive-house-sparrow-deterrent)--just be sure the bluebird parents return, as they will be spooked, too.

You can keep pulling the nesting material in the hopes that the house sparrows will move on, but sometimes they just retaliate by taking over the nest box of native birds nearby. Some folks try to keep the sparrows busy on a nest in another box and poke holes in the eggs, addle them, or freeze one at a time, so the parents stay preoccupied with a nest doomed to fail. In very bad, high pressure situations, the only remaining options are to trap and euthanized invasive house sparrows or take the nest box down.

Beautiful Bluebird Nest Box

This nest box is beautifully crafted and will be sure to last for many years to come! It’s designed to deter Sparrows so hoping it does that as we have Tree Sparrows at our feeders. We put the nest box out on the pole (with baffle) we purchased thru Nature Niche a few days ago and within an hour, we had a male Eastern Bluebird checking it out…the female was in tow! Hoping for some fledglings soon!

Great Box!

My bluebirds choose the slot box over a round hole box anytime. Until now I have not had an easy way to check on my box. This is the only slot box thati have found that has the viewing g pane which became a necessity this year when some house sparrows showed up. The sparrows do not like this box and bluebirds are happy. I have 3 of them now.

Awesome nesting box!

It was easy to install and exactly what I was looking for. My neighbor has a pvc nesting box with a round hole, so I wanted the complete opposite. I wooden box with a slotted hole. Both boxes have nests being built in them!
