Safflower tastes bitter to squirrels, so they tend to leave it alone, if there are other good things to eat in the area. Safflower tends to deter not only squirrels, but grackles and starlings as well, with its bitter taste and hard hull, although some individuals may adapt and eat it with time or in desperation.
Attracts: Cardinals, Jays, Chickadees, Nuthatches, Grosbeaks, Titmice, Doves, Finches (House, Purple), Downy Woodpeckers, and Chipmunks; occasionally House Sparrows
Use with a large suet cage, suet feeder, or seed tray. Compressed seed cake that birds can’t scatter to make a mess and sprout.
