Unique and beautiful this flat wooden spurtle is carved by hand from native tree species by a local Michigan forester. Each is one-of-a-kind and varies in color, shape, and size. This particular design has an additional notch on the side to help pull hot pans or oven racks forward for easier scorch-free retrieval.
Spurtles were developed in the Scottish Highlands and have been used for centuries to stir porridge. With less surface area for things like oatmeal other grains to stick to; it helps the porridge achieve a creamy consistency, preventing lumps. The flatness of this kind of spurtle lends itself to used for flipping things like oatcakes, pancakes, or omelets; as well as scrambling eggs, stirring soups and stews, mixing heavy batters, or stirring sourdough starter!
