Unit protects

Unit effectively keeps cylinder food dry. Birds prefer seeds dry.

This is my first use of the seed cylinders and I love the ease of setting them up, as well as the fact there’s no mess left after the birds have enjoyed them.
Most of the birds are small and cling to the cylinder itself. I’m also looking for a cylinder feeder that has some type of perch on the bottom, as some of the birds try to stand on the bottom and slip off.
All in all, I’m happy with the purchase and will be back for re-orders.

Thanks for your feedback! I have asked the manufacturer to consider making the bottom differently to offer a little more perching room and will share your feedback, too. Not sure if you saw in the directions or not, but you can flip the bottom plate over, so that it curves upwards and offers easier perching for birds like cardinals. This cylinder feeder is also nice paired with a safflower cylinder to strategically feed your native clingers (e.g. birds that naturally cling to eat, including goldfinches, finches, woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches) and deter invasive European starlings that aren't as good at clinging. Other seed cylinder feeders with more perching options can be found here: https://nature-niche.com/collections/seed-cylinder-feeders

Cylinder Seed Cake Holder with Top

It’s okay, nothing to write home about. Small and the bottom is to slick for the birds (small birds) to hi old on to. They have to hang sideways on the seed cylinder. The top is big compared to seed and the bottom. Birds not really liking it.

Many small birds naturally cling to eat, and some folks in the wild bird feeding industry have dubbed them 'clingers,' including goldfinches, finches, woodpeckers, chickadees, and nuthatches. On seed cylinders, birds will cling to get to that one desirable seed or piece of fruit they really want. That's the beauty of seed cylinders, the birds can peck out what they want rather than sifting and flinging unwanted food out of the way.
It can take wild birds a couple of weeks or more to adjust to a new type of food and feeder, so I'm hoping with some more time, more of your birds will make that adjustment, and you'll see increased use. This cylinder feeder is also nice paired with a safflower cylinder to strategically feed your native clingers and deter invasive European starlings that aren't as good at clinging.

Cylinder Feeder

Great feeder for clinging birds. Larger birds like Starlings, Grackles and Blue jays are not so successful but all sizes of Woodpeckers are (Downy, Hairy, Red breasted). I've been using the"hot" cylinders so squirrels are focused elsewhere. Easy to assemble and add a new cylinder.
