Safflower

Safflower

1.9 lbs · 7.5" × 4"Single ingredientDeters squirrels

Just safflower seed pressed with gelatin. Cardinals, chickadees, titmice and finches eat it readily, while its bitter taste and hard hull tend to discourage squirrels, grackles and starlings. A few may learn to eat it over time, but it's the best plain-seed choice if bullies are emptying your feeders.

Seed cylinder FAQ

Still not sure? Call us at 989-423-1477 and a real person who knows birds will help.

Will squirrels eat my cylinder?

They will if they can reach it. The best fix is a baffled pole system: mount the feeder 4 to 4.5 feet up, with the pole 8 to 10 feet from anything a squirrel can jump from. You can also choose a hot pepper cylinder, which mammals avoid, or our Safflower cylinder, which squirrels tend to skip (chipmunks may still visit).

Do I need a special feeder?

You need a cylinder feeder, but any standard one works. Every cylinder has a hole through the center, so it slides onto a standard cylinder feeder rod or hanging hook. No feeder yet? The bundles above include one.

How long does a cylinder really last?

Most last a few days to two weeks in an active yard, depending on how many birds visit and whether squirrels can reach it. During fledgling season and in winter, one can disappear in a day. Safflower and hot pepper cylinders tend to last the longest.

What happens when it rains?

Cylinders are held together with gelatin, which softens in water. They handle light rain fine, but for heavy rain or snow, use a feeder with a roof.

Will my birds need time to adjust?

Sometimes. Birds can take up to a month to find and trust a new feeder or food. Hanging the cylinder near a feeder they already visit helps. If you also put out loose seed, they'll usually finish that first.

I'm brand new. Which one should I get?

If you don't have a feeder yet, start with the Best of Everything Cylinder Banquet Bundle: it includes a feeder and a mix of our best-selling cylinders. If you already have a cylinder feeder, grab a 4-pack of Fruit Berry Nut Medley, our best seller.
