Chickadee/Wren Nest Box with Peaked Roof - Tigerwood

Not only is this chickadee/wren nest box pleasing to the eye, it is also designed and built to provide years of service for your bird friends and lasting enjoyment for you. 

WOOD: Each box is made from Goncalo Alves (aka tigerwood; Astronium graveolens or A. fraxinifolium), an exotic hardwood from Central and South America. Tigerwood is a strong, dense, durable wood, making it an excellent material for nest boxes. Published wood characteristics data show tigerwood to be dramatically stronger and more durable than either northern white cedar or western red cedar, common nest box woods. Tigerwood is so durable, it is used unfinished for decking.

FEATURES: Each box is constructed consistent with guidance from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's NestWatch Program and similar organizations. Each box has the following features:

• Thick, dense wood to insulate and protect. Unfinished, untreated wood to provide a non-toxic home.
• Rabbet and dado joint construction for strength and tightness. Vent holes for air circulation.
• An overhanging sloped roof to promote dryness.
• A recessed floor and drainage holes to promote dryness.
• A hinged front with a locking pin for easy access. A suitable height from floor to entry hole.
• A 1-1/8" entry hole to limit access to the intended species. Climbing grooves below the entry hole to allow chick egress.
• Stainless steel hardware.

MOUNTING/PLACEMENT: The box can be mounted on a pole using appropriate brackets on either the back or bottom. It should be placed five to 15 feet above ground with the opening facing away from prevailing winds. Place one inch of wood shavings on the box floor.
