I absolutely love Mr.Bird Hot Bells. Squirrels stay away but the birds adore them!

Works just as well as I hoped!

The squirrels ate the regular kind of seed bell very quickly. But they don’t eat these. I’ve seen some sniffing around it and they don’t like it. But the birds do like it. It takes them a while to get used to it, but they do.

Endless birds all day

I bought the Flaming Hot Feast Seed Bell, because I've been buying the flaming hot large cylinder for a while now, and I know how much the birds love it. All day long, I have an endless stream of birds, visiting my back yard. Best part is that the chipmunks and squirrels never bother with it. From woodpeckers, nuthatches, and cardinals, to finches and even robin's. Every bird comes back, day after day, to feast on this tasty treat.

Does hot pepper affect birds?

I bought two bells. Chickadees, wrens and other small birds seemed to enjoy the seeds very much and the bell was gone in a few days. I put up the second one a week later, and this time, the birds seem to be put off by it. They take one seed and leave, not to return. I wonder if there is more hot pepper in this batch and if it affects birds. Can it affect their digestion? Anyone has science about this? Apart from keeping the squirrels away, the heat might have other secondary effects on birds.

Thank you for the question! It's one I asked before deciding to carry hot pepper products in my store. The short answer is there haven't been scientific studies done to understand what negative impacts there may be from using capsaicin in bird feed. Below are articles that discuss what is known, and some wild birds naturally do eat pepper plants that have this chemical. Birds' pain receptors are different from those of mammals, and they are not triggered by capsaicin. The biggest concern I could find was the possibility of eye irritation from loose powder, but again no empirical data to confirm or deny. That's why I only carry pre-mixed products. I had so many customers ask for this option, that I added a handful of hot pepper products to my inventory. I always caution people about how to use it safely (protect eyes and hands and wash after installation) and to keep pets from accessing the product.
In your case, I'm not sure what would be putting the birds off. The manufacturer uses a consistent recipe, so variation in the amount of capsaicin shouldn't be a factor. I would recommend placing the bell under a weather guard or other protection to minimize degradation and movement of small particles from weather. The bell is loved by titmouse, cardinal, chickadee as well as woodpeckers. Squirrels won't touch it. However squirrels cleaned up on the suiet.

I was very skeptical about purchasing this bird bell because the squirrels have always eaten everything we put out. I am thrilled to see that the birds are enjoying it this winter and that the squirrels don't touch it!

What’s changed???

I purchased Mr. Bird’s Flaming Hot Feast Bell in 2020. True to representation, the birds loved it and the squirrels stayed away. To prepare for the winter feeding, I purchased 12 bells and set out the first bell. The squirrels ate the whole bell and the birds stayed away. Have the ingredients changed? Perhaps the ratio of the ingredients? If the same thing occurs when I hang the second bell, I will be seeking a refund.
I normally would have rated this product with 5 stars. I will give it a 4 because my bell may have been devoured by a starving squirrel. If the squirrels feed off the second bell, don’t waste your money… 1 star! The manufacturer may have changed the ingredients or the ratio of the ingredients to save money and sure enough … the squirrels are back! Very disappointed[.
