Helpful Tips for Using Your Flicker Nesting Box:

• Consider packing the nesting box to the bottom of the entrance portal with fine woodchips and/or hamster bedding. This will allow the birds to "excavate" the cavity themselves and choose the depth they want it to be. 
  
• Mount the box so that it is angled slightly forward to help the chicks climb out. (This could be especially helpful if you are going to mount it on something man-made like a pole or post.
• Place the box in a shady area, near sparsely scattered trees, with an open flyway.
• To prevent squirrels from using the box, place the box on a pole equipped with a baffle at least 10' from the nearest tree (the distance most squirrels will jump).
• European Starlings can usurp cavities occupied by flickers, even when additional nest boxes are offered nearby. Therefore, management of European Starlings may be necessary for flickers to be successful in some areas.
• Because flickers forage primarily on the ground, avoid treating lawns with any chemicals.
• Height Range From Ground: 6'-12'
• Spacing Between Nest Boxes: 330'

NOTE:  All houses need to be cleaned out before the next season starts. We suggest doing cleanouts in late February through late March, ahead of prime nesting season depending on where you live, and again in September through mid-October, so the birds have a clean place to roost during the fall and winter months.
