What is Puddling?
Butterflies gather around damp areas to sip mineral-rich water, known as puddling behavior. The butterflies use their proboscis to sip up essential nutrients from the "puddle". Included in these nutrients are minerals, salt, and amino acids for hydration, reproduction and other biological functions. These areas can attract a gathering of butterflies, providing a place for social interaction and potential mating opportunities.
Using Your Puddler:
You can use a mix of sand, gravel, compost or top soil, then add water until it is moist but not standing water. Do not allow standing water to pool up in your puddler as this will attract mosquitos.
Where to Place your Puddler:
Place your puddler in a spot with partial sun or dappled shade, preferably in your pollinator garden or someplace by a rich nectar source that will lure them in.
About the Pottery:
Stoneware pieces are individually handmade using actual leaves from native and/or garden plants, in this case Common Sunflower (Helianthus annuus), that the artist collects herself (many from her own garden). Each piece is then bisque-fired, glazed, high-fired, and finished by the artist personally, making each one a unique work of art. (Slight variations in color, glaze and size will occur.)
