Join Entomologist Elly Maxwell for an in-depth look at Integrated Pest and Pollinator Management (IPPM) in a mid-Michigan back yard. We will explore Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques for common garden pests including, Japanese Beetle, Four-Lined Plant Bug, and Viburnum Leaf Beetle. Learn the difference between IPM and IPPM, with specific examples of protecting commonly overlooked Michigan backyard pollinators. This wholistic approach to pest management is intended to keep pests in balance while preserving beneficial insects, including the existing natural enemy complex, pollinators, decomposers, etc.

The class will occur at our retail location at 2004 W. Wackerly St. Midland, MI from 4-5pm on Saturday, May 4th.  Approximately 45-50 minutes will be dedicated to this presentation, followed by a general Q&A session.

Our speaker, Elly Maxwell, grew up in Freeland, MI and earned a B.S. from Michigan State University in entomology followed by a M.S. from Auburn University also in entomology. In school she was especially interested in IPM and worked in grape crop systems followed by vegetable crops.

She has been the staff entomologist at Dow Gardens since 2006, where her job responsibilities include IPM, sharing insects with the community, beekeeping, and managing the annual Butterflies in Bloom event. She oversees employees responsible for tree, pond, and turf care.

Elly also teaches Entomology 110 locally for Michigan State University and maintains around 20 beehives in the Midland area. She is a member of the Michigan Entomological Society and the Saginaw Valley Beekeepers Association. She resides in Midland with her husband, son, and cat. In addition to insects, she also enjoys the outdoors, Zumba, traveling, and cooking.

Cost to attend is $10/person.  All proceeds go to our speaker. To register, please visit our website to pay online. There is an 10-person limit for this class. To cancel or be placed on a waitlist, please call the store at 989-423-1477.
