Reminiscent of New England beach huts, this nest box features a real wood shingled roof and clapboard front and a silvered metal hole protector around the 1.25"-wide entrance. It's perfect for small bird species such as chickadees, nuthatches, and wrens and will make a delightful addition to your garden! Please note, this batch of houses is more of a sage green rather than the pea green shown in the manufacturer's photos.

FEATURES:

  • Made of slow-seasoned FSC timber with wildlife-safe, water-based paint.
  • 1.25"-wide entrance hole reinforced with a silver-colored metal ring.
  • Two holes in the floor for drainage, with ventilation gaps at the top of the side walls for airflow.
  • The right side swings upward for monitoring and easy nest cleanout. A single pin can be twisted to unlock and swing the door up and open. To lock, simple twist the pin.
  • Metal loop attached to the upper back of the house for hanging.
  • Overall outer dimensions: 9.75" H x 6.75" W x 6" D, including the roof overhang.  Box interior dimensions: 4.13” W x 4.13” D x 6-8” H. Distance from the floor to entry hole is 5", with ~2" of headspace available above the entry hole.

Nest Box Installation:
The nest box should be sited on a tree, wall, or pole at least 5-8' above the ground, preferably in a place where it cannot be accessed by cats and predators. The ideal aspect is facing east, southeast and northeast are also fine for maximum solar radiation in the morning, but facing away from prevailing winds is most important. The box should be left empty as wild birds will bring their own nest material into the box, or add a thin layer of wood shavings (not sawdust) for the chickadees to "excavate."

Maintenance:
The nest box is made from slow-seasoned FSC timber, and the outside may be painted annually with water-based paints only to maintain its appearance. The nest box should be cleaned out of any old nesting material and disinfected with a suitable product such as Bird House Cleaner outside of the breeding season (Sept to Feb). To open, swing the brass catch to the upright position and pivot the nest box side by opening at bottom.
