Birds fatten up on the nutrients in fruits to fuel their fall migration journey and survive winter weather when other resources decline.  Woody plants also provide cover from predators, roosting shelter, and year-round landscape benefits for you! Now is a great time to plan out what new trees and shrubs you want to add to your landscape to better support wildlife and where you want to place them. Many of the plants discussed will be available at Nature Niche's native plant sales during the 2023 growing season.

The workshop will occur at our retail location at 2004 W. Wackerly St. Midland, MI from 4-6pm on Saturday August 12. Approximately 1.5 hours will be dedicated to a joint presentation, review of a helpful handout covering over 50 native woody species, and a general Q&A session. The last half hour will be dedicated to working with individual landowners to help choose suitable species for their own properties. Please bring site photos, aerial photos, and/or sketches of your intended tree and shrub planting areas and your site-specific questions (paper and digital versions welcome).  We're looking forward to helping you select site-appropriate native species that will thrive and help you meet your wildlife habitat and aesthetic landscape goals!

Our speakers, Jeanne Henderson and Martha Holzheuer, gave this well attended talk at the October 2022 Mid-Mitten Wild Ones Chapter Meeting.  If you missed it, now's your chance to learn about some great native woody plants!  Jeanne worked 29 years at Chippewa Nature Center, starting as an interpretive guide and environmental educator teaching school and scout programs for K-12 students. She was promoted to full-time Interpretive Naturalist in September 2013, leading field trips, Earth Day activities, butterfly counts and programs, tree and shrub identification hikes, wrote nature articles for the Great Lakes Bay Magazine, and more. She retired in October 2019 and continues to pursue her birding and plant interests with friends and the Wild Ones Mid-Mitten Chapter. Martha is the owner of Nature Niche, and she spent ~15 years working as a landscape ecologist and an environmental consultant, specializing in threatened and endangered species protection and permitting, native plant design, invasive species management, wildlife habitat enhancement, and ecological restoration.  Before that, she taught woody plants field labs while earning dual Masters Degrees in Terrestrial (Forest) Ecology and Landscape Architecture at the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  She's a Certified Ecological Restoration Practitioner, Professional Landscape Architect registered in Michigan, Certified Ecologist, and Certified Arborist and serves as a board member for the Society for Ecological Restoration Midwest-Great Lakes Chapter and Michigan Wetlands Association.  She loves botanizing and gardening with native plants, nature photography and art, helping people learn about and connect with nature, strategizing to protect rare species, gift giving, and making people happy.

Cost to attend is $20/person.  To register, please visit our website to pay online. There is an 8-person limit on this workshop, so attendees will receive plenty of individual help with their woody plant selections. To cancel or be placed on a waitlist, please call the store at 989-423-1477.
