Great Product

I bought this feeder because the starlings would empty out my old suet feeder within a couple days. I even tried the upside down suet feeders that starlings aren’t supposed to be able to use and they finished off those suet cakes just as fast. With this new feeder I am able to keep starlings out and the woodpecker that I put the suet cakes out for is able to enjoy the food all to his own.

LITTLE TO NO BIRDS USE IT

I EXCITEDLY brought this feeder during nesting season so my redbellied, downy and hairy woodpeckers can enjoy suet without being bullied by the starlings and grackles. The woodpeckers, titmice, wrens, and 1or 2 sparrows flew to check out this feeder a few times. Very disappointing that their are no continuous users for this feeder that cost so much. Hopefully things change in the winter.

Thanks for the feedback! It can take several weeks for birds to adjust to a new feeder, especially if it's in a new location. I've also observed that it can take some extra time for the birds to adjust to the barrier guard, so don't give up yet! For best results attracting downy woodpeckers, titmice, nuthatches, and other small birds that prefer suet, place the feeder close to shrubs and/or in or near trees that provide protective cover and staging perches for them to feel safe and inspect their surroundings for predators before flying to the feeder. Feeders placed in large open spaces will not attract many woodpeckers. Please note that the 1.5' x 1.5' barrier guard is designed to keep out the larger birds, so the hairy and red-bellied woodpeckers won't be able to access the suet. Hope this helps!

Slow Adoption

The feeder is beautiful, and similar in shape and design to the suet feeder it is replacing. The differences are a solid bottom so suet cannot be raided from below, and the distance between outer cage and inner suet, making it almost impossible for larger birds. So, similar design, same location, why so few customers? My hypothesis is the shiny copper. I did read reviews and noted this problem, but feeder is beautiful. Wrens and Downies have started using it, but it’s slow! Still, I have high hopes! Better than grackles devouring the suet.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, it does take some time for birds to adjust to a new feeder. In my own backyard, it took about two weeks when placed near other feeders for this style and color of feeder. May take up to a month if new feeder is placed in a new location. I do think you will see more use with a little more time!

No birds yet

No birds have used the feeder yet. One bird landed on it and thought about trying to go inside, but decided not to. That’s why I’m giving it three stars I will update my review with more stars or if you were in a couple of weeks if given the opportunity.

Looks good

I got this feeder to stop the grackles from eating all the suet, and it works wonderfully for that. One brave little wren flew in as soon as I hung it, but none of the other birds seem to like it, preferring the seed feeder. I’m hoping more will come in the future.

Thanks for your feedback! Yes, it may take a couple of weeks for the birds to adjust to the new feeder. The braver birds won't take quite as long :) I had a chickadee checking out then using daily the bluebird version of this feeder, but it took the bluebirds about a week to make the adjustment.
