Bird feeder pole set

The following is my comment about the pole set that I sent directly to Erva Tool. I did not get a reply from them.
"I purchased your 5-piece Feeder Pole Set with Twist-In Ground Socket online from Nature Niche in Michigan. When I opened the box, I was really impressed with the quality of the poles. The material is thick and substantial. The weld is continuous and clean. The finish appears to be long-lasting. And a plus is that it's made in the USA. But, when I began to install the pole, I found the swaged end was a bit smaller than the opening in the female end of the pole. When the three sections were assembled and stood up, they waved in the air like a wet noodle. The top moved at least +/- an inch. I tried shimming at the base to no avail. The pole waved around and made it impossible to get it to stand straight up. I puzzled over the problem for a while and decided the best solution would be to glue the sections together using a high-strength epoxy. I was able to get the assembly straight by laying it on the floor and clamping it to a flat upright surface. The next morning, I had a sturdy, straight one-piece pole. I was then able to insert it into the socket using a thin plastic shim for adjustment and got it perfectly straight up. I also reversed the position of the pole from your instructions so the swaged end would face upward so water could not enter at the seam. To ease this problem, I would suggest you make the swaged end at least a tap fit into the female end or, even better, make the connection threaded.
Your product is great, however it needs to be tweaked a bit to make it better. I look forward to a long life for my new bird feeder pole."

Thanks for sharing that feedback and for sending it to Erva directly. They may not have responded, but I suspect they will consider your suggestions. I imagine they avoid the screw together assembly, because that is very hard to keep consistent across batches and years of products and harder to disassemble over time. Also likely drives the cost of the product up. Here's what they have told us about why and how to resolve the sometimes loose slip fit issue:
The reason for the sometimes looser fit is that Erva tries to maintain a sizing sweet spot from production run to production run. They could achieve a perfect fit, if they ran just one batch. The trouble is there is variation in size for this tubing (to say nothing of batches in past years - still in the field), and the next batch from the vendor might be off a couple of thousandths of an inch. They choose to err on the side of a looser fit, because customers sometimes add sections years after the original purchase, and they want to be sure they will fit.
To fix the loose slip fit, cut a 1' piece of electrical tape and apply it to the swaged portion of the pole close to the end. If it's still loose, cut a second or larger piece of electrical tape and apply. This will definitely fix the problem.
Hope this explanation helps!

This is exactly what I needed, it's machined well, sturdy and easily screwed into the ground despite many roots and rocks. I recommend this product.

Feeder Pole Set

Ordered this a while back, along with a new bluebird house and baffle to go with the pole set. This is the best I have ever seen! Very well constructed, easy to put together and a great price. Was impressed with the packaging and the fast shipping... I will definitely order from Nature-Niche again! Thank You Martha for your personal help putting this all together 😊And yes I have bluebirds!!!!

That's wonderful news! I'm so glad the nest box and pole setup are working well and that you are enjoying the bluebirds!
